To apply for the wells mountain initiative Scholars Program 2023, you must submit a complete application via our online scholarship application process (preferred method) or via postal mail to arrive at our office by 11:59 PM EST on March 1, 2023. The 2023

Ideal Candidates:  A student, male or female, from a developing country who:

  • Is 35 or under on March 1, 2023
  • has completed a secondary education with good to excellent grades; 
  • will be studying in his or her home country or another developing country; *
  • plans to live and work in his or her home country after graduation;
  • Has previously volunteered and/or is willing to volunteer while receiving the WMI scholarship
  • Although they may have some other funds for education, they will be unable to attend school without a scholarship.
  • Submits an English-language current application that is complete and legible (please proof-read). Because we receive so many applications, we will not consider incomplete applications.

*Students planning to study in the United States, Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, or Western Europe will not be eligible for a WMI Scholarship.

WMI scholarships range from $300 USD to $3000 USD per year and are awarded throughout the recipient's undergraduate education. The maximum scholarship amount is $3000 USD, which we rarely award. Our typical scholarship award is $1500 USD.

The following elements must be present for an application to be considered complete:

A clear personal photograph.

Essay (topic is stated on application form) (topic is stated on application form).

  • Application form for the year 2023.
  • Personal statement for an essay.
  • Two letters of recommendation.*
  • Secondary school transcripts must be official.
  • Official grading scale for secondary school grades**.
  • Official transcript of tertiary studies grades (if applicable).
  • The official grading key for interpreting tertiary grades.**
  • Your national exam results are official.
  • Official grading key for interpreting national exam results**.

*Recommendation letters differ across cultures. Guidelines for Effective Application-Recommendation Letters have been developed to assist applicants in obtaining letters that will be supportive of their application. Read this document and distribute it to the people who will be writing your letters of support.

**The school issuing the grades or the government issuing the national exam must provide official grading keys. Unofficial grading keys will result in your application being disqualified. This document can be obtained from your secondary school, university, or government.

APPLYING ONLINE: You will be taken to a portal where you must create a free account (username and password), fill out information, and upload documents. We strongly advise you to apply online because you will be able to save your work and return to it multiple times. You will also ensure that your application will be received and reviewed once it is submitted online.

File format types accepted are: JPG, PNG, GIF, DOC, DOCX, PDF (version 10 or newer).


Maintain good marks in all university courses.

Be an active supporter for community service and involvement.

Throughout the year, perform, record, and document 100 hours of community service.

Finish the Academic Semester Report and the Community Service Report for WMI Scholars.

Official semester transcripts should be sent twice a year.

Communicate openly with the Student Scholar Coordinator about your situation as a student LANGUAGE.

Applications must be submitted in English.

All documents are available in a variety of languages, with official English translations.

Contrary to popular belief, there are NO FEES associated with submitting a scholarship application to the Wells Mountain Initiative!
