Scholarship Overview

The Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship Programme, initiated by the Hungarian Government, presents a golden opportunity for international students to pursue various study programs in Hungary without tuition fees. The Tempus Public Foundation manages the scholarship program.

Eligibility Criteria

Field of Study

Applicants are encouraged to apply for study fields aligned with the educational cooperation programs between Hungary and specific Sending Partners.

  • Type of Scholarships: Stipendium Hungaricum scholarships are available for bachelor, master, one-tier master, doctoral, and non-degree programs (preparatory and specialization courses).

Value of Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship

  1. Tuition-Free Education:

    • Exemption from the payment of tuition fees.
  2. Monthly Stipend:

    • Non-degree, bachelor, master, and one-tier master level: Monthly amount of HUF 40,460 (approximately EUR 130) for living expenses in Hungary.
    • Doctoral level: Monthly scholarship of HUF 140,000 (approximately EUR 450) for the first phase and HUF 180,000 (approximately EUR 580) for the second phase, as per Hungarian legislation.
  3. Accommodation:

    • Dormitory place or a contribution of HUF 40,000 to accommodation costs for the entire scholarship period.
  4. Medical Insurance:

    • Health care services according to Hungarian legislation and supplementary medical insurance for up to HUF 65,000 (approximately EUR 205) per year/person.

Duration of Scholarship

The duration varies based on the candidate's chosen program:

  • Bachelor programs: Fulltime (2-4 years), Partial (1 or 2 semesters)
  • Master programs: Fulltime (1.5-2 years), Partial (1 or 2 semesters)
  • One-tier master programs: Fulltime (5-6 years), Partial (1 or 2 semesters)
  • Doctoral programs: Fulltime (2+2 years), Partial (1 or 2 semesters)
  • Non-degree programs: Preparatory course in Hungarian language (1 year), other preparatory and specialization courses (up to 1 year)

Applications shall be submitted to the responsible authority of the Sending Partner. Applicants are advised to thoroughly review all application requirements on the official Award Webpage before applying.

Other Details

  • Applications will not be considered from Hungarian citizens or former Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship Holders re-applying for studies in the same cycle of education.
  • The program, in operation since 2013, is based on bilateral educational cooperation agreements with more than 50 Sending Partners across 4 continents.
