NUS Global Merit Scholarship
Introduction
The National University of Singapore (NUS) Global Merit Scholarship is a highly coveted university-level award specifically for Freshmen. It is designed for high-calibre individuals who demonstrate academic excellence, present an excellent record of co-curricular activities, and exhibit outstanding leadership qualities.
NUS Scholars are expected to contribute significantly to the NUS community during their studies and develop into dynamic global leaders capable of effecting positive societal change post-graduation. The Global Merit Scholarship is one of three tiers of NUS Scholarships offered to prospective students, alongside the NUS Merit Scholarship and the NUS Undergraduate Scholarship. Interested students submit one single application to be considered for all three tiers.
Eligibility
To be eligible for the NUS Global Merit Scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Be a Singapore Citizen.
- Possess outstanding Singapore-Cambridge GCE A Level, local Polytechnic Diploma, International Baccalaureate Diploma, NUS High School Diploma, or equivalent qualifications.
- Demonstrate strong leadership qualities and potential.
- Have a good record of co-curricular activities.
- Must be applying for admission to a full-time undergraduate degree programme at NUS (exclusions apply, see Field of Study).
Note: Transfer applicants from local or overseas universities are not eligible.
Field of Study
The scholarship is open to applicants pursuing most full-time undergraduate degree programmes at NUS. However, the following programmes are excluded:

Scholarship Benefits
The NUS Global Merit Scholarship offers comprehensive financial support and opportunities:
- Tuition Fees: Subsidised tuition fees covered (after MOE Tuition Grant).
- Living Allowance: S$6,000 annual living allowance.
- Computer Allowance: S$2,000 one-time allowance upon enrolment.
- Accommodation Allowance: Annual allowance depending on the residence type:
- S$5,550 for staying in a Hall.
- S$5,750 for staying in Ridge View Residential College.
- S$6,000 for staying in Houses (excluding Valour House), PGP Residence, UTown Residence, University Town Residential Colleges, or Acacia College.
- S$7,350 for staying in NUSC Residences or Valour House.
- Overseas Programme Allowance: S$7,500 per semester for non-Asian countries and Japan, or S$5,000 per semester for other Asian countries, for Student Exchange Programme (SEP) or NUS Overseas Colleges (NOC). This is up to a maximum of two claims and is pro-rated for shorter durations.
- Guaranteed SEP Placement: Guaranteed placement with one of NUS overseas partner universities for one semester.
- Accommodation Priority: Priority for on-campus accommodation for the first two years of undergraduate study (subject to meeting eligibility criteria and application deadlines).
- Residential College Priority: Priority to enroll in Residential College Programmes (University Town College Programme and Ridge View Residential College Programme) upon submitting a complete application and fulfilling eligibility.
Number of Awards
The specific number of awards is not specified. NUS reserves the right not to award any scholarship if there are no candidates of sufficient merit.
Application Start and Closing Date
1 February to 19 March 2026. Only one common application is required.
Generally, selection interviews are conducted from late March onwards, and applicants are informed of outcomes by late May.
How to Apply
The scholarship application process is integrated with the university admission process.
- You must first submit an application for admission to NUS to receive an application number.
- Submit the scholarship application online via the Applicant Portal.
- Upload supporting documents, such as co-curricular activities records, at the Applicant Portal.
- Submit one Referee Recommendation Form online (this must be submitted separately by your Junior College/Polytechnic/High School Principal or Tutor).
Applicants shortlisted for interviews will be assessed based on application strength and interview performance (Law applicants may be assessed based on Law admission tests/interviews).
Application Fee
There is no separate application fee specified for the scholarship itself, though standard university admission application fees may apply.
Bond
The NUS Global Merit Scholarship is a bond-free scholarship.
Other Details (Terms & Conditions)
- The scholarship is tenable for the normal candidature period of the undergraduate course.
- Recipients may not concurrently hold any other scholarship, fellowship, bursary, award, or free aid without prior university approval.
- Renewal Criteria: The scholarship is renewed every semester provided the recipient maintains a Grade Point Average (GPA) of at least 4.0 (or equivalent), or grades within the top 35% of their cohort for Law students, and maintains good conduct.
- Repayment: If a recipient withdraws from the university or terminates the scholarship prematurely, the university reserves the right to impose repayment of all scholarship monies disbursed.
